Today, we’re giving you an exclusive preview of The Herbarium library content with an excerpt from the article, “Using Herbal Infused Oils Topically to Address Inflammation” by clinical herbalist and HA team member Heather Wood Buzzard.
Internal inflammation can be combated externally with the use of herbs that support nerve, muscle, and tissue health while also reducing inflammation. One winning approach to tackling internal inflammation and kickstarting the body’s own system of restorative processes is to use external herbal preparations in the form of herbal infused oils.

In this article, we will contain our discussion of topical-use herbs to three: arnica (Arnica spp.), Solomon’s seal (Polygonatum biflorum), and St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum). These are three of the most versatile herbs for tackling a diversity of inflammatory processes from recurring discomfort to acute injury. Through the lens of one case study, we will examine the efficacy of all three herbs together as part of a holistic approach to acute inflammation.

There are a number of advantages to using infused herbal oils, as opposed to ingesting a tea, tincture, or other internal-use form of a plant. Making infused herbal oils by carefully macerating fresh or dried plant parts in a carrier or base oil is an easy and rewarding process that results in high-quality topical preparations. Infused herbal oils are also cost effective and fairly accessible to buy or make.
Together, the impressive trio of arnica (Arnica spp.), St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum), and Solomon’s seal (Polygonatum biflorum) make something of a catch-all formula for tackling internal inflammation on unbroken skin from the outside in. Herbalist jim mcdonald (n.d.) suggests adding some yarrow (Achillea millefolium) for added synergy.

Arnica, Solomon’s seal, and St. John’s wort in combination work dynamically where nerve or muscle pain is involved while balancing each other energetically. While arnica is considered drying and warming, Solomon’s seal is moistening and cooling, and St. John’s wort is fairly neutral. St. John’s wort is to the nerves as arnica is to the muscles. Solomon’s seal—with its penchant for mending connective tissue—ties it all together, literally and metaphorically.

Traveling with a convenient salve made from the oils of these three herbs means that you will never be without access to a reliable herbal preparation for easily addressing a wide range of different types of inflammation, from acute injury to chronic pain. This trifecta makes an excellent massage oil for use on the upper and lower back, neck muscles, and anywhere on the body where there is stiffness and soreness.
